A friend, family member or co-worker has a problem and you give them advice. This is the longest task, so plan two or three pieces of advice with a reason for each.

Timing

30 seconds to prepare
90 seconds to speak

Structure template

Greet the person and show you understand the problem.
Advice 1 + reason + short example.
Advice 2 + reason + short example.
Optional advice 3, or a warning about what to avoid.
Encouraging close ("Let me know how it goes").

Model answer outline

Prompt: Your friend wants to save money for a trip to the Rockies next summer. Give your friend advice.

Opening: "That sounds like an amazing trip, and you have plenty of time to save."
Set a monthly target: work out the total cost, divide by the months left, move the money to a separate savings account on payday.
Cut one regular expense: for example, make coffee at home instead of buying it every morning.
Book early: train or flight prices and campsites in the national parks get more expensive closer to the date.
Close: "If you start this month, you will be on the trail in no time."

Common mistakes

Giving one idea and repeating it for 90 seconds.
Using only "you should"; vary with "I would recommend", "Why don't you", "It might be a good idea to".
Talking about yourself instead of the person who needs advice.

Homework

Record a 90-second answer to this prompt on your phone, then listen back once and note one thing to improve: "Your co-worker feels stressed about a new project at work. Give your co-worker advice."
